New Mexico Truck Driving FAQ

Who oversees the New Mexico commercial driver's licensing process?
The New Mexico Motor Vehicle Department (MVD) is in charge of the CDL licensing process. You will be required to go to one of their branches in person to take both the written and vision tests. You will also be required to take the driving portion of the CDL test at one of their approved locations. For more information, visit the nearest New Mexico MVD branch. You can also call the MVD informational hotline at (888) 683-4636.

What are the requirements for a New Mexico CDL?
In order to obtain a New Mexico commercial driver's license, as in other states, you must be at least 18 years old. However, this will limit you to driving only within New Mexico. To operate a big rig outside of the state, you must be 21 years old.

You must have a valid Class D New Mexico driver's license (which is the regular driver's license to operate a car) and complete a Department of Transportation health certification to make sure you are healthy enough to drive a commercial truck.

You are also required to take and pass the CDL exam which consists of both written and driving tests. You must score an 80% or better on both tests to receive your New Mexico CDL.

What information am I required to bring when testing for a New Mexico CDL?
You need a valid form of identification which may include a driver's license, passport, or military ID, if applicable. You will also need your social security card and proof of your New Mexico residency, showing your current address. This may include anything from your bank statement to bills.

Is truck driving training required prior to CDL testing in the state of New Mexico?
No, there are no federal requirements in place to regulate truck driving training prior to testing for a CDL; however, it is highly recommended you attend a truck driving school to ensure you can successfully pass the CDL test on your first try. The one exception is LCV drivers (those that operate longer combination vehicles) are required to get training in hours of service, driver wellness, whistleblower protection, and driver qualifications.

How often are New Mexico truck drivers required to pass the Department of Transportation physical exam?
Every two years. After every exam, you will be given a medical certification certifying you are physically eligible to drive a big rig. In the state of New Mexico, you are required to carry the certification with you at all times while driving the truck.
